Ministers message

By the Honourable Minister: Dr Abraham Iyambo

Following independence, Namibia's national goals for the fisheries sector have been to ensure that living marine resources are utilized optimally and at a sustainable level and, that the development of the fisheries industry contributes to the nation's overall economic and social development.

These goals are as valid now as when they were first articulated and our progress to date has been rapid. However, we do not intend to become complacent and will continue to build on what has already been achieved. Developments in world fisheries and their effect on Namibia mean that we can no longer focus purely on fisheries activity in Namibian waters but also need to address wider issues.

To respond to the continuing challenge we have developed this strategic plan, which sets out our strategies and initiatives for the next five years.

This will help us all in the Ministry focus on the tasks ahead. The fisheries sector is dynamic and we in the Ministry will need to keep page with change by continuously monitoring developments, reviewing the effectiveness of our strategies and developing further initiatives in support of Namibia's fisheries industry.
